Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a computer-based standardized examination, which is recognized around the world for admission to UG and PG courses. Though the GRE score is not used for law, medical and some management courses, but all the other courses, GRE is recognized. Students need a structured approach to get good scores in GRE. Types of GRE tests and approach
GRE includes a general test and a subject-based test. Usually, most of the candidates appear for the general test however, subject tests are sometimes asked by universities for specific courses. GRE test is divided into three parts as explained below.- Analytic Writing Assessment (AWA), Verbal Reasoning Section and quantitive Reasoning (QR) Section.
AWA consists of essay writing as per analyzing an issue and analyzing an argument. The time limit is 30 minutes with each scoring from 0-6 in the scale of 0.5 marks. The verbal reasoning section comprises of two sections namely, reading based and vocabulary based. It consists of 20 questions with 30 minutes per section.
The quantitative reasoning section comprises of 20 questions on fields like algebra, arithmetic, geometry and data analysis, etc. Further to it, an experimental section with either verbal or quantitative aptitude with time limits of 30 and 35 min respectively are also asked.
Within the verbal and quants section, the questions are section adaptive. This means that based on the level of questions answered, the difficulty level of the questions in the next section will be decided and scoring will be adjusted accordingly.
GRE is conducted in a two-time slot- one at 8 am and the other at 12:30 pm, throughout the year from Monday to Thursday. It is conducted in a two-time slot- one at 8 am and 12:30 pm. GRE test centers are available in all major cities. You can attend the exam for a maximum of 5 times in a year subject to the condition that the minimum gap between two tests should not be below 21 days. You need-to-have a valid passport register for GRE at least one month in advance. Secondly, you need to have a valid passport with the validity of at least 6 months.
